The daily battle against Osteoarthritis: Jocelyne’s Story
Today is the World Osteoarthritis Day and we’re sharing Jocelyne’s story, a 58-year-old nurse working in a correctional facility. Her testimony illustrates the challenges millions face daily, underscoring the critical importance of this awareness day.
The beginning of a long fight
“Knee osteoarthritis started affecting me around 40-45 years old,” Jocelyne explains. Despite knee surgery at 18, it wasn’t until her forties that the pain became truly debilitating.
For Jocelyne, osteoarthritis means much more than joint pain:
- Limitations in daily activities: “No longer being able to take a long walk to walk the dog.”
- Restrictions in leisure: “I’d like to visit a museum, but I have to limit and choose what I’m going to see.”
- Giving up on life projects: “I’d love to take an extraordinary trip, but it’s no longer possible.”
- Difficulties with household chores: “Cleaning the house, picking something up from the floor, doing the dishes. Daily life is really impacted.”
“There’s really a lot of stress on the joint, particularly the knee,” she emphasizes.
Hope in innovation
This story shines a light on patients like Jocelyne, whose complex cases of knee osteoarthritis (OA) underscore the critical need for innovative treatments.
Jocelyne’s journey through traditional treatments illustrates the frustrations many refractory OA patients face:
“I followed the undoubtedly classic course of treatment: anti-inflammatory drugs, then sessions of physical therapy, icing the knee, shockwave therapy… Personally, since I didn’t see any of these as long-term solutions, I also threw myself into what you could call parallel medicines: homeopathy, I also tried acupuncture, and they did achieve some results in terms of the pain, but they were still only short-lived.”
Despite these challenges, Jocelyne remains determined. “I really needed to find a solution,” she says. Her testimony resonates particularly for a special day as World Osteoarthritis Day.
On September 17th, we’ll join the global community to:
- Raise public awareness about the realities of osteoarthritis
- Highlight unmet patient needs
- Present the latest advances in research and innovation
At KiOmed Pharma, we believe that every testimony like Jocelyne’s is a call to action. Our mission for this World Osteoarthritis Day and beyond is clear: : to bring innovation to patients with unmet needs by reducing physical and social OA burdens.
